Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to implore the favor of the LORD. (Zechariah 8:22)
God’s future for Jerusalem is “catholic”. Peoples from all nations will seek God there. For there God will dwell in His Temple in the midst of a people He calls His own. Then, what Moses has said will be more than fulfilled. In Deut. 4:6, Moses said that if Israel was obedient to the Laws given to them, nations will be amazed at their wisdom and intelligence. But when Jerusalem becomes known as the faithful city (Zech. 8:3), all nations will want to be a part of her.
The prophecy is fulfilled at Pentecost when the disciples of Jesus receive their baptism of fire and Spirit. It was there when the Church, the new Temple of Christ’s Body, is publicly inaugurated and formally begins its mission. At that time, the Babel-event was reversed when the disciples began to speak in the different tongues of the nations.
Gather all nations into your Church, Lord; send the Holy Spirit upon them that our dreams of a world united may be realized in You.
